Sunday Snippet

I know that yesterday was supposed to be my review day, but the Real Job has been giving me wonky hours, and yesterday in my sugar rush I had to choose between getting another hour of writing in before bed to fix a scene from Midnight Sky that I accidentally screwed up, or writing a review. As much as I love sharing new books with readers, and as excellent as Marked by Alex Hughes is, I think I made the better choice for myself. Anyway, this week's 8Sunday snippet for WeWriWa continues with Midnight Sky. You can read more snippets from the novel here, though I've been writing quickly so the scenes won't really connect. Not that I'm complaining.

In this scene, Claire and her friend Gemma have been kidnapped and separated from their friends, who they've just learned will be thrown into a fighting pit against starved, bloodthirsty Hellions. The ringleader of this event has also told them they'll be used in terrible ways for the pirates holding them captive. Gemma, a fiery woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind, gives her opinion on the matter.

---

“This is not going to happen,” Gemma snarled. I turned and looked at her, seeing the rage on her face as she gripped the bars tightly. “I am not going to watch them die. I am not going to be treated like a plaything.”
I looked at her. “Can you get out of the cage?” I asked.
“Yes,” she replied, so quiet I barely heard her. “They didn’t search me well enough.”

Writing this novel has been going really well lately, and I'm excited to keep it going. I have a three day weekend coming up, so I'm hoping to *possibly* complete the rough draft by Wednesday. I'm at least halfway I think, so if I manage to hit my target 10K in the next three days (lofty, but I'm not planning to do much else, and not complaining about that, either), I might get it done or close to.

In other news, I've been featured in some interviews and blog posts! Mocha Memoirs Press asked me to give my thoughts about writing horror for Month, which you can read here. I was also featured on fellow Mocha author S. H. Roddey's blog here to talk about Valentines day and horror.

It's been a fairly good week, and I'm hoping that next week will be even better. Don't forget to check out the snippets from other WeWriWa authors and leave them some love!

  3. Karyn is correct, you've done a great job building tension in this snippet. I always enjoy resourceful characters and clumsy jailers. Well done!

  6. Fierce girl, there. I just hope she doesn't get them out of the cage and into a worse mess! (FYI, you have Claire looking at Gemma in the first paragraph, and then looking at her again in the second one.)

    1. They'll probably get out of trouble before getting into it again. ;) Also, thank you for pointing out the error!
