Sunday Snippet

It's been quite the week for writing! First and foremost, I started the contest for a signed copy of Demon's Daughter by simply answering which creatures you find more interesting– angels or demons. Winners will be chosen at random, and it's purely an opinionated answer. I find both have an interesting mythologies, and I honestly wouldn't be able to chose one over the other.

This week also saw the release of another short story, Survivalism, featured in The Dead Walk: Volume 2, and the acceptance of my short story The Maker of Monsters to the Spawn of the Ripper anthology! I also had the pleasure of interviewing WeWriWa author Christina Ochs, as well as reviewing her latest novel, Rise of the Storm. It's a great book and I'm excited to read the next one.

Speaking of WeWriWa, it's time for this week's 8Sunday snippet! I'm still working on the last novel in my Dark Sky trilogy, Obsidian Sky, which is turning out to be waaaaaay longer than I expected it to be. Not to mention much darker. Suiting, since all the stakes are raised to their highest, the despair is setting in, and I never write a series without closing in a big bang. So it kind of makes sense that this snippet would feature – you guessed it– Sawyer as he realizes his new crew is about to embark on their final, dangerous mission. He knows they need motivation, something to rally them, and when you're writing a steampunk/horror/fantasy, there's only one way to do it...

“You any good at making speeches?”
Beck looked at me like I asked him if he preferred to wear long skirts or short skirts.
“Not my best skill.”
I frowned. Figured as much.
“Mine either,” I admitted. “Oh well.”
I turned from my commanders and walked to the railing in front of the helm, overlooking the deck. I placed my fingers the corners of my mouth and whistled sharply.
Every head turned in my direction. I looked at all of them, seeing each face in turn.

I'm having a great time with this novel. Sure, I kind of dread editing, but so far I only made sixteen comments in Word (my little trick for something I need to look into/check up on, but am too lazy to do at the time), so I think I'm making good progress. I'm going to have to take a break soon to write the next Blood Moon story for the blog at the end of the month, which will likely take up my one free day during this work week. The Real Job is sucking the life from me, and it's a total trap– I would accomplish so much if I didn't have to work, but I need the money because independent publishing is expensive.

Still, knowing I'm writing books that readers seem to like, completing a project and moving onto another one, is just what I need to forget about the job I need in regards to the one I will do anything for.

    1. Thank you! This series won't be released until February next year (still working on the release of my CURSED trilogy, with the second novel scheduled for December), but I have a snippet of it featured in AVAST, YE AIRSHIPS! as well as another, different story featured in THE STEAM CHRONICLES anthology. I haven't read THE STEAM CHRONICLES yet, though it's on my growing TBR pile, but the stories in AVAST are pretty good, and definitely worth the time. :)

  2. I like where this is headed. I get a sense that the audience isn't going to like what she has to say any more than she is going to like saying it!

    1. I couldn't help it– I got a funny image of it in my head and needed to write it down. ;)

  4. I'm just in awe of how prolific you are. And I have a feeling this won't be a fun speech. 😀

    1. Aww thank you! And it really wasn't... but maybe it didn't need to be fun. ;)

  5. Short skirts or long skirts. Love it! Short, terse and makes a great statement.

  6. "Beck looked at me like I asked him if he preferred to wear long skirts or short skirts." Such a fabulous line. Humorous yet telling of both characters. Can't wait for next week's. :)

  7. I thought kilts were supposed to be short. Though I guess there's those split skirt things that men n the Scandinavian countries wear....

    1. I was thinking more along the lines of mini-skirts (enjoy that mental image :P), though I'll never consider kilts anything other than badass.
