After some ups and downs this week, I'm pleased to be back on the train with my current WiP, my entry for the Michael J. Sullivan writing contest. While I know the suggestion is that I write something to cater to his readers, who are probably fans of classic fantasy, I wanted to submit an entry with a story I'm passionate about. I decided to write an action-escape short based on the Areios Brothers series, which I'm in the process of rebuilding and re-writing anyway. In this scene, my main character, a descendent of the Greek god of war, Ares, faces off against a Titan descendant as he desperately attempts to save his brothers life. In the series, Derek's main weapon is a spear, which he uses against the Titan wielding a chain. Needless to say, Derek knows how to take care of himself...
I reacted fast, digging my heels in the ground and bringing the spear
up to protect my chest and face. I leaned away as the chain snapped around the
spear’s shaft. The smile dropped from the Titan’s face. Keeping my grip secure,
I twirled the weapon in my hands until I captured more of the chain. The Titan
was dragged with it. Then I used Adaptation to pour more strength into my body,
and pulled.
He practically flew into me. I planted my foot into
his stomach before he crashed into me, and almost snapped him in half.
Though I have a lot more blogging to do (it's the end of the month, so I have a Blood Moon short story to post and a monthly goal post), but with the speed and passion that I'm writing, I should have this short done in a couple days. The contest isn't open yet, but I want to send my entry in as soon as I can so it can be viewed. Like most of my submissions, I'm not going to assume that I'll win. In fact, I doubt it very much. But it feels good to come back to a series that I love, especially when I draw so much happiness from it.
Whether or not I win, I'll know I'm a good writer. In fact, So, I Read This Book Today just posted a review of Path of the Horseman that put a smile on my face and left me with a much needed confidence boost. I hope there will be more in the future.
Remember to check out the other amazing 8Sunday writers on WeWriWa and leave them some love as well! Cheers!

Wow, that was a great action snippet. Derek is one bad-ass, taking on a titan and winning!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that he's a character I hold close to my heart for that reason, among others. I've written entire chapters of stories where it's just Derek taking on some kind of Greek monster. It's so much fun pushing him to the limit, then seeing just how far I can take him again. Gotta love being an evil writer, sometimes. ;)
DeleteThis is an excellent action bit! I love the premise, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's been nothing but fun to write. I wanted to add more than eight sentences!
DeleteWow, quite the fight scene! Exciting, enjoyed the snippet. got my adrenaline up.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear it! :)
DeleteSuch a nice, tight action sequence. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThat's pretty classic fantasy except for the 1st person POV, Amy. Swords and Sorcery can get real tired, but nothing like serious revisiting of mythology!
ReplyDeleteGood to know, since I always write in first person and I think this one can slide into the fantasy category easier than some of my previous ideas.
DeleteAlmost snapping someone in half with your foot sounds... excessive. But I'm sure the Titan deserves it!
ReplyDeleteThe description is how it looked in my minds-eye. But when his younger brother is literally about to be devoured by monsters, Derek gets... intense. >:)
