Sunday Snippet: "The sky used to hold hope for me."

Regular viewers of the blog might have been expecting a book review today, and sorry to say, Real Life has caught up with me these last few weeks. I worked on New Years Eve and didn't actually fall asleep until 4:30AM the next day. Four hours later, I was back at work, and today I have to work again, go to a belated Christmas party, sleep, then work one more day. I'm a little rushed, so I have to make compromises, and a review is one of them. But I got 28 books on Boxing Day (I'm a writer and I got gift cards, what did you expect?!), so there will definitely be one next week. Today, I wanted to focus on starting promotions for my upcoming release, Crimson Sky, the first in my steampunk horror trilogy, Dark Sky, and what better way to do that than with WeWriWa? Posting 8-10 sentences from my current work in progress/upcoming release has done nothing but good for me, and I'm very excited about this new series. Since I'm on a time crunch, and always look for a reason to use the amazing graphics sent to me by Deranged Doctor Design, here are the first sentences from the first chapter of Crimson Sky, where main character Claire is running for her life against bloodthirsty monsters...

They’re always watching. They’re always waiting. They’re always starving…

Ten years ago, the sky shattered and the Hellions emerged. No one was able to keep them from destroying the city of Westraven. Now that the bloodthirsty monsters rule the skies and have forced the few remaining humans underground, Claire Abernathy lives in a nightmare. She survives by using her skills as an engineer for a ruthless tyrant connected to her mother and father’s past failure.

Then Claire’s world is torn apart when her sister Abby is kidnapped by the Hellions, and Claire herself is taken by dangerous sky pirates known as marauders. But Claire will not be intimidated by them while her sister’s life hangs by a thread, and so she strikes a deal with them: If they help rescue Abby, she will fix their ship and give them the chance to take the revenge they desperately seek.

As Claire fights for her sister’s life, she begins to realize that the Hellions are not the only dangers she’ll face. Burdensome secrets and devastating betrayals threaten her at every turn, and if she loses herself to them, it won’t just be her life that is destroyed…

Crimson Sky is still up for preorder on KindleKoboGoodreads, and Smashwords, and I'm very excited to see what the response will be. I'm hoping to do some spotlights and tours to promote it. On that note, if any WeWriWa authors are interested in promoting their own upcoming releases, I'm always open to spotlights and blog hops, especially if you write urban fantasy, fantasy, steampunk, or horror. Comment or email me at amybraunauthor (at) gmail (dot) com for more details.

Last but not least, I won another award! One Book Two gave me and my Cursed series a Standout Award for 2015! I'm honored to get this award, and hope that more will be on the way.

And that's all I have for now! I'm off to get about 6hrs of sleep probably not before my last day at the Real Job before my weekend. Be sure to check out the other WeWriWa authors and leave them some love in the comments! Cheers!

  3. Thanks for getting my blood pressure up first thing on a Sunday morning. I'm sure the coffee had nothing to do with it.:-) Super-exciting beginning! Congrats on the award, your Boxing Day book haul, and hope you get some rest, eventually.

  5. I was kinda confused where the actual excerpt was, although the book does sound really exciting and quite different. Assuming I found the right set of sentences, where she's running, those onyx claws evoke a shivery image all right - loved it!

    1. Thank you! I did mean to post the snippet in text instead of graphic, and next week I will, but this week's been absolutely insane and I literally put the post together at last minute. I've spent the last two days almost falling asleep while standing up. But now it's my weekend, and I can relax!

    1. Thank you! I listen to a lot of heavy metal or dark, creepy techno, and it's amazing how much that helps. I have to have either of those genres going if I'm going to write a fight scene. ;)
