Sunday Snippet: "... I would die smiling..."

Despite the cold that is absolutely destroying my voice (I sound like a teenage boy going through a snot-filled puberty). First, and most exciting of all, Dark Divinity has been released! I'm stoked about this new novel in the Cursed trilogy, and the reviews so far have been positive (thank you Cassandra and Christina!), which makes me excited for the winner of the One Book Two giveaway contest (they also posted a review of Path of the Horseman here)! I'll have a couple other giveaways set up throughout the coming month to promote the release, and how better to help Dark Divinity further by teasing a little of what's to come?

In this week's snippet for Weekend Writing Warriors, Constance reflects on everything that's transpired since the events of Demon's Daughter (so spoiler alert!), and resolves to stay strong throughout it, even when she knows the odds are stacked against her.

As the days since Lucifer’s rising went on, Dro began to mention that angels were trying to get into her mind and track her down. They considered Dro an abomination with too much power, a threat that needed to be eliminated.
The only way to stop them was to close the Gates of Heaven and Hell again, something I wasn’t sure would be possible given how many enemies we’d gotten over the last few years.
Before we started worrying about angels and demons, my sister and I lived under the thumb of a psychotic drug lord. Things had quickly gone downhill when we left, and they weren’t the ‘forgive and forget’ type of group. Naturally, I became a fugitive, and naturally, every law enforcement agency wanted to lock me up in a three by three cell. But I would stand in front of them all to protect Dro. It would kill me if that’s what it came down to, but I would die smiling as long as I knew she was safe.

Hell has risen. Heaven is descending. Sacrifices are made...

It’s been two months since Constance Ramirez’s adopted sister Andromeda was used as the Key to opening the Gates of Heaven and Hell. They escaped with their lives, but made countless enemies as a result.

Now that demons are beginning to weave into ordinary lives, their only hope is to find a way to close the Gates of Heaven and Hell before the angels and demons begin a war. Something that becomes only harder as one of Constance’s deadliest enemies resurfaces.

But as they struggle to stay alive and find the Gates, they learn that a huge sacrifice will be required if they succeed, and this time, Constance isn’t sure the cost will outweigh the reward...

Being sick has kind of killed my writing groove over the last week. I'm procrastinating with my short story for the blog (it's coming along, I swear!) and it's been a while since I looked at the idea for my entry to The Bazaar of Bad Dreams contest. That being said, I am doing some writing with the Areios Brothers novel I left half-finished before NaNoWriMo started. So at least I'm getting my word counts in for the day, puny as they are.

I'm hoping that next week will be better and this sore throat will be gone so I can get my word counts back up to at least the 2K range. Remember to check out the other Weekend Writing Warriors and leave them some comment love! Cheers!

Amy

  5. Congratulations on the release! This is obviously a very complex and complicated story but the sisterly love shines through in the excerpt. Terrific!

  6. I rarely read SF, but your snippet would be enough to tempt me into the genre again. Nice work.

Yikes, that's like a frying pan to a forest fire. Exciting snippet!

  8. You might not want to hear this, Amy, but probably my favourite part of this post was your description of your voice. It was 80 Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) today here in Tucson ... not that I'm rubbing it in or anything. ;-)

    1. Haha well once I thought about it, it seemed shockingly accurate. ;) And no, not rubbing it in at all. ;)

  9. Yeah, I don't even bother with daily word counts and stuff. I write slowly - like Tolkien slow.

    1. I'm in the habit of using them as motivation, but every one writes at different paces. As long as you write the words, that's all that matters!

    2. Agreed. You're sharp. Wishing you much success.

  10. I hope you feel better! I've been dragging all week, too, with my own head cold, so I totally feel your pain. Very interesting snippet, though, and it makes me really intrigued to look further into the series. Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. I'm still stuffed up and sneezing, but I can tell I'm getting better because my energy levels are back up and I'm capable of writing without losing motivation five minutes in. I'm glad you're interested in the series! I have a couple giveaways going on (see this post http://literarybraun.blogspot.ca/2015/12/weekly-recap-and-giveaways-galore.html) so feel free to enter them! I don't know if a lot of people are entering the One Book Two one, so that could give you a better shot. Just saying. ;) Anyway, thanks for the comment! I hope you feel better soon, too!
