Sunday Snippet: "You will have to do."

It's time for 8Sunday! Honestly, being part of the Weekend Writing Warriors is a highlight of my week. NaNoWriMo is done for me, as is Storm Born is finished! I am so relieved. As much as I've enjoyed this novel, I have to say I'm glad it's over. I'm obsessed with the idea and the world I've created, but the editing errors and mistakes I made are hanging over me like... well, a storm cloud.

Since I'm going to return to Dark Divinity to begin its promotion (Three more days! Woo hoo!), I figured I would add this final scene from the first chapter of Storm Born, to let you know that it's not just the Stormkind that exist, but others as well. In this scene, main character Ava has been confronted by a Stormkind when another man appears and wards it off. She thinks she's gained a saviour, but after looking into his eyes, Ava realizes she's not that lucky...

They weren’t just dark. They were black, so deep that I couldn’t even see his pupils.
I wanted to beg, fight, do anything to make him let me go. But I knew I was mercilessly trapped.
Helpless.
His inky eyes traced my body, scrutinizing instead of leering.
“You are not ideal,” he growled. “But I am short on time. You will have to do.
I didn’t know what he meant, didn’t even know how to start asking, when he reached for his belt and took out a dagger with a light in the crystal blade.

Between the Stormkind and these new warriors, it's safe to assume that Ava will have her hands full in the next little while. *evil writer smile*

As far as writing is concerned, my main goal now is to get a couple short stories out of my head to unwind, starting with Stephen King's The Bazaar of Bad Dreams contest as well as my next Blood Moon short story. Sooner or later I'll get back to writing big projects and editing (good God, the editing), but my focus for the next little while will putting my next novel, Dark Divinity everywhere I can.

I can already tell there are things I will need to organize, but for now I'm just going to bask in my upcoming three day weekend. I've got friends, brunches, dates, dinners, chocolate, relaxing horror reads (that's a thing, right?), and a huge sense of accomplishment. No matter how much work I have ahead of me, I'm always proud to know that I've completed a novel. Speaking of completing novels, be sure to check out the completed and soon-to-be-completed works from the fantastic Weekend Writing Warriors. They all work crazy hard, and deserve some commenting love.

Cheers!

Amy

  1. Yay! The feeling of getting that draft down on paper is soooo relieving, but soooo terrifying, particularly when you realize just how much work there is still to be done. I didn't attempt NaNo this year, but congrats to you for getting another satisfying draft on the page! :-)

Also, loving the snippet. The description is right on (and right scary). I look forward to seeing what comes of the new novel baby! :-)

  2. Your words reflect well the sense of hopelessness of Ava when she realises that this man is not, after all, her saviour. Great snippet.

  5. Argh! you're so good at putting your characters in impossible situations and then getting them back out- sometimes a little worse for the wear. :-) Congrats on finishing another book!

I've finished Dark Divinity (@##$$%%%%@#%!!! Woman!!!) and should get the review up on the first. I promise not to froth at the mouth. Much. :-)

  10. Congrats on NaNoWriMo!

Yikes, talk about from the frying pan and into the fire. I wonder how she's going to avoid ending up dead...

  11. You are missing a quotation mark after your last line of dialogue...but regardless, yikes. I hope she finds her way out of this. Are you posting consecutively from your work, or bits and pieces here and there. In other words, will I find out what happens next week?

    1. Yes, I noticed and will correct it ASAP. I'm going to move onto some other stories that I've fallen behind on, but STORM BORN should be back in a few months while I edit through it. Glad you enjoyed the snippet!
