So here's another tease of the first chapter of Storm Born, which follows immediately after the opening from last week's 8Sunday snippet for Weekend Writing Warriors. Main character Ava is watching the beginning of the century's biggest storm, and knowing that no matter how they prepare, it might not be enough to keep her and her family safe...
Even though we knew this was the year, that history and
technology had given us the tools and warning we needed, it never made a
difference.
Nothing could prepare us for the Centennial Storm, or the things that came with it.
The flashes of light increased in frequency. With them came a low,
rumbling sound from overhead. It sounded like thunder, but wasn’t. It didn’t
crack in a loud burst and grumble back to the clouds. No, this went the opposite way. The thunder started in a
low menacing growl, then became louder and louder until it was a roar that sent
a shudder through the entire house.
Like I said, I love this story. I can't wait to see how it wraps up, though I can tell editing is going to be a b*tch. Yeah, I know it always is, and yeah, I know it's necessary, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!
What I do like is the author spotlight I was recently part of on Snuggle Books! I can't really say it's part of the Dark Divinity blog tour, since I'm still trying to figure out how to put those together efficiently and I seriously think I dropped the ball on this one, but it's always nice to get a little bit of recognition, even if it's in a mention for a review, such as this one for Avast, Ye Airships!
Anyway, that's all I have to share for now! I'm hoping for a really good writing weekend to plow through, and maybe even complete Storm Born, though that's a pretty lofty wish. Though I am a writer, so lofty wishes are part of the job, right? Hope everyone enjoyed this snippet and leaves some love for the other wonderful WeWriWa authors!
Cheers!
Amy
Love the atmospheric vibes! Very intense with foreshadowing. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteI completely understand the struggle of "how in the world does this stuff work in this world?" I didn't get even the basest idea really until halfway through the first re-write of my first novel. Now that I'm working on the second book in the series I have a much better idea, but the protagonist doesn't really know yet, so neither does the reader. It's made for interesting writing time. Sometimes I think it's better not knowing.
ReplyDeleteI loved the description of the not-thunder in this piece. Living in a place where very large and very loud storms are a yearly occurrence, it both frightens me and sounds very familiar. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
I totally agree with you there– that's why I prefer writing series novels rather than standalone. You can always play around with the first book then solidify things in the next ones. Thanks for the comment!
DeleteKnowing you, you're about to open a can of whoop-ass on your poor characters. Love the intense foreboding.
ReplyDeleteAbout halfway through Dark Divinity, and it's giving me nightmares! That's always a good sign, by the way. :-)
Christina, I think you know me too well. >:) I'm glad you're enjoying Dark Divinity! Can't wait for the review!
DeleteNice thunder description. I'm new to the story but this scene gives it lots of character to wonder about!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteNormally I love storms but this one you're weaving is very intimidating and I can't wait to read more! Excellent excerpt, can hear the thunder rumbling all right.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad it stuck with you. :)
DeleteI agree, fantastic job on the thunder description and sensory. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteGreat description of thunder that's not thunder. I am intrigued.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for you! Closing in on 50K. Woohoo! :-)
Thank you! I'll be at 50K tomorrow!
DeleteYikes, sounds like there's something up there, roaring and angry! Never a good sign for the characters.
ReplyDeleteNope, not at all. >:)
DeleteHorrifying! Nice work.
ReplyDeleteWow! Even from such a short snippet, I can see why you're enjoying writing this story. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to more. And yeah, no one looks forward to that dreaded editing part. eeks!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
